A Leading Hand was started in April 2007 by Guinevere Ashby as a dog walking and pet sitting business for the Strathmore, Alberta community. As a proud "pet parent" of Suki, and having formerly commuted daily to Calgary for work, she understood the frustration and guilt of other pet parents having to leave their "kids" alone for such a long time without a break. Guinevere saw a clear need for pet care in the growing community.

Knowing how much more well-behaved and receptive to training Suki was after a good, long walk, Guinevere began to map out a variety of routes around the local parks, paths and waterways in order provide Suki with twice daily walks. Unfortunately, she did not encounter many other dogs, so this didn't give Suki much chance to socialize and learn positive group behavior skills. So, the company was formed to give Suki the chance to meet new friends and help other pet parents to keep their "best friends" healthy and happy during the day.

In May 2009 Guinevere began offering obedience training classes and private consultations in Strathmore, and was very pleased at the postive response of dog owners. Short-term plans include expanding into the Chestermere and Calgary area.

Guinevere and Suki are looking forward to another fantastic year, doing exactly what they love to do!

Guinevere Ashby (Owner and trainer)

Guinevere loves bringing her work home! Since starting the business with her dog, Suki, she has been certified as a Dog Obedience Trainer, and most recently is completing her studies in canine massage therapy. She loves taking Suki to explore new outdoor spaces whenever she can.

Suki Ashby (President)

Suki is the reason the company was started. She loves her walks around Southern Alberta, especially splashing in the Bow River and investigating the hoodoos in Horseshoe Canyon. Her favorite part of the day is when she helps other dogs get much needed friendship and exercise!
